Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween everyone! I know it's not celebrated much outside the US, but here we make a big deal out of it. It's a great excuse to bring out your inner kid and act like a fool. I love it! Pat and I went to a great party dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Duane Chapman, a.k.a. Dog the Bounty Hunter and his wife Beth (we just got home). What did you wear?

Here's a window display from Zeezo's Magic Castle, the place in Colorado Springs to buy your Halloween costume. It's owned by my good friend Mark. I went there twice in the past week in search of props for our costumes, and the place was extremely busy. Good for you Mark!

Just a quickie snap of the First Congregational Church I took a few weeks ago while on a senior portrait shoot. I like the clouds.

The curious horse

I was shooting some maternity portraits about a week and a half ago, and this horse was my audience. My clients and I had gone in search of a nice location with great natural light and fall foliage. We pulled over to the side of the road when we found this pasture. The horses stood and watched us intently, especially this big guy. I wonder what he was thinking: "What are those crazy people doing over there? What's the big deal about a pregnant lady?!?!" Or maybe he just thought we had a snack for him ;o)

On a side note, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my big brother Chuck! We love you!

A snowy day

Admittedly this photo is terrible! I was on somewhat of a photo assignment to walk away from the computer for exactly five minutes and then take a picture of whatever I saw. Well, it was so cold, windy and snowy out that I only got a few steps from my back door! This is what I saw -- our woodpile, prettily laden with fresh snow.

Platte Avenue just east of Circle Drive. I've no particular reason for posting this, other than I love capturing random moments like this one.

Kissing Camels

This is Kissing Camels, one of the more distinct rock formations in the Garden of the Gods. When we first moved here, we came across a street named Kissing Camels and I didn't get the reference. I just thought it was an incredibly silly and nonsensical thing to name a street. Eventually I figured it out! ;o)

You can really see how the rock got its name. It's picturesque on any day of the year, but especially so in the late afternoon sunshine of an Indian summer day.

The Garden of the Gods

I know, another picture of the Garden! I can't help it. When we have a really beautiful fall day, I especially feel the need to take a leisurely drive through there. This photo at the entrance to the park was taken a few days ago (the 19th, to be exact) on one of those perfect Indian summer afternoons. If you look closely you can see there's a runner enjoying the park along with me.

Merry Christm -- what?

Wait a minute, isn't Christmas in December? Then why did Sam's Club have all this holiday stuff already out on October 16th? I was so aghast that I had to take a picture.

I guess they're really hoping for a big shopping season.

Welcome back my soldier!

I saw this in traffic last month and had to grab a shot of it! You see this sort of thing a lot in Colorado Springs. It always makes me smile.

Just another twilight shot to complement yesterday's post. This is looking westward from Tejon Street as I was walking back to my car. That's the Wells Fargo Bank building on the left, the Antlers-Hilton in the center, and the Holly Sugar building on the right.

Tejon Street

Here's a photo of Tejon Street that I took as I left the Sonterra Grill on a Friday evening last month. In my twenties I worked for five years at a camera shop a couple of blocks north of this spot. Back then Tejon was mostly a business and shopping district with many high end little boutiques and shops, as well as a few landmark restaurants and night spots. The building in this picture, which now houses Fujiyama (sushi) and Sonterra (southwest fusion?), used to house a Woolworth's. I loved going there in the mornings because they had a diner at the back of the store, and all the old timers would congregate there for coffee and eggs and chat about the weather.

Over the years Tejon Street evolved into more of a party district. Now it's bar-bar-bar, restaurant-restaurant-restaurant, not to mention the humongous nightclubs that bring in the crowds on weekend nights. There are still a few boutiques, but the rents have gotten so astronomical that only the most successful are able to make it. It's a pity, because I think a strong shopping core is the heart of any downtown. One of the first shops to go down was the Chinook Bookshop a few years ago, which caused quite a public outcry and an extended philosophical mourning period among locals. It was an institution and I still miss it. The owners officially stated that they were closing the store because they had decided to retire, but I think that the internet and large chain stores must have had at least some bearing on their decision. I treasure my few Chinook bookmarks that I still have around the house. They'd put one in every book you bought.

Earlier this year the camera shop where I had worked so long ago, Shewmaker's, closed its doors. It had been there since 1936. For me, downtown hasn't been the same ever since. Whenever I walk or drive past the empty building where Shewmaker's used to be, I get a little sad.

The Cadet Chapel

I have to admit, the Cadet Chapel is a cool place to shoot a wedding. I was there a couple of weekends ago helping a friend cover a wedding on a perfect Colorado day. Beyond the airplane statues you can see the distinctive steeples of the Cadet Chapel.

The US Air Force Academy

I was at the AFA a couple of weekends ago to help my friend Charlotte shoot a wedding. The Cadet Chapel and its surrounds are a big tourist draw around here, but since I've shot numerous weddings there I hardly even pay attention anymore. This particular day was golden and sunny and perfect, so in between wedding pictures I played the tourist for a few seconds. Here's a statue of a C46 Commando that sits on the plaza between Arnold Hall the the Cadet Chapel.

Riding pillion

I captured this shot yesterday in traffic, on the way home from an appointment. I think it's hilarious that this scary biker guy has a purple stuffed monkey riding pillion!

Zebulon Pike

Here he is, folks: the man, the legend, Zebulon Pike. He "discovered" Pikes Peak (because, you know, it wasn't there before he found it -- all 14,110 feet of it were mysteriously hidden from view until he came along). The funny thing about Zeb Pike is that he never made it to the top of his namesake mountain! He made an attempt in 1806 but gave up after two days. What a wimp! Nowadays people run a marathon up its flanks! Just kidding about the wimp part. It must have been quite a challenge in those days to crest a fourteener.

It seems like everything around here has got the word Pike or Peak in it. My street intersects with Pikes Peak Avenue, for instance. We've got Peak this, Pike that, et cetera. One of the popular coffee houses in town is called Pikes Perk -- clever, no? I wonder why old Zebulon didn't go with Pike Mountain instead of Pikes Peak. Guess it wasn't alliterative enough ;o)

English ivy

I'm a fan of English ivy and I've got it growing in a couple of different spots in my own garden. It's evergreen, which is nice. I know it can become invasive but I like the form of the leaves. This ivy was on a brick wall in an alleyway where I was doing a photo shoot last Friday.

Last minute daylilies

I was doing a portrait shoot on Friday in a cool alleyway downtown, and we came across these gorgeous blooms that were just asking to be photographed! They even had picturesque little droplets of water clinging to them. The weather turned frigid and icy the very next day, so I'm glad I captured these before their demise.

The Colorado Springs Balloon Classic

Ballooning is a big part of the culture here in Colorado Springs. The Balloon Classic is held every year over Labor Day weekend at Memorial Park, a few blocks from my house. I've attended numerous times, mostly under duress because you have to wake up very early in the morning if you want to attend! It's always an amazing sight to see the balloons being inflated and taking flight. It's pure magic.

This year Labor Day weekend for me was a busy one -- I spent the Saturday shooting a wedding, after which I ended up in the hospital emergency room for over eight hours (see this post for an explanation). A little after 8:30am on Sunday morning as Pat was driving me home, I snapped this photo of balloons floating in the sky. I apologize for the poor quality -- I shot it through the windshield of my car, plus I was on happy drugs ;o)

Summer's end

Another snap from September 3rd. I remember that as I took this shot I was thinking it was such a "summer" image, and that very soon the weather would turn. Here in Colorado Springs we have a short summer because we're at such a high altitude. We keep the heat on in the house through the end of May, and by the end of September we're turning it on again. Just like that, summer's gone. We're definitely on the brink of winter now!

I'm back!

I'm so happy to be back on my feet and blogging again! (Read the previous post for an explanation.) I did not mean to be gone for so long but I was more or less immobilized for two and-a-half weeks, and once I got healthy enough I was scrambling to catch up on my work. I feel reasonably caught up enough now to resume my Colorado Springs Daily Photo blogging. Thank you dear readers for your patience and kind words!

Here's a photo I took in my sadly neglected front garden on September 3rd, which was a gorgeous day. Alas, today is not a balmy fall day at all. It's only 21 degrees out (that's -6 Celsius) and the roads are extremely icy from the drizzle. There was a 50+ car pileup on the interstate this morning! We've had a pretty nice Indian summer up until now. I guess Mother Nature is letting us know that winter is around the corner.
