A black squirrel in Colorado Springs

In all my years living here, I don't believe I've ever seen a black squirrel.  We spied this cute little guy the morning after THIS crazy storm, in front of Pat's brother's house. I happened to be well-armed with a camera so I snapped off a few shots.  He looks just like a regular garden-variety squirrel except for his dark coat.  I've seen pictures of other black squirrels, and they had cute tufted ears. Supposedly that species lives in Colorado too but I've never seen one around here.

I think this particular little critter is quite unique. May you live long and prosper, Mr. Black Squirrel!

It looks as though Colorado has three squirrels that can be black. Those are the rock squirrel, Abert's Squirrel, and Pine Squirrel. The Division of Wildlife has a page on mammals that lists the species of squirrels for the state. http://wildlife.state.co.us/WildlifeSpecies/Profiles/Mammals/Pages/ChecklistofColoradoMammalsPg2.aspx

We just had this unique little visitor on our deck this morning and we have 3 dogs! I think he must have been attracted to our bird feeder. I did not know black squirrels lived here!(Loveland) What a gift! He was solid black from tail to nose. No tuffs on his ears so I'm guessing pine? Our neighbors do have a pine tree. Hope to see him again so I can capture a picture! Karey 2/28/16

We too have our black squirrel without the tuft ears. Watch him everyday running the fence lines, running across roof tops and jumping to and from trees. I think they are making a comeback and will become more common. Our furry friend makes his home in Cinnaron Hills.

Just moved to Colorado Springs a month ago. I love squirrels and sit by the front window in the morning to watch them frolic. I saw a big black squirrel for the first time this morning! Beautiful little creature.
