Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

The Western Horseman building

This is the building that housed Western Horseman Magazine until fairly recently. I've always thought it was a stately presence on North Nevada Avenue near the Dog Track, in an area that has become fairly seedy over the last few decades. It was built in 1955, a few years after the magazine moved its headquarters to Colorado Springs. In researching for the post, I just read that its architecture was inspired the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, N.M. I never knew that! (And I've been to Santa Fe many times, so shame on me for not noticing.) Western Horseman relocated to Texas five years ago. I don't know who occupies the building now, if anyone. I notice that the life-sized horse statue on the roof has been removed, but otherwise the building looks much the same as it always has and is in nice shape. Clearly somebody still loves it!

Yes, an abandoned building is not, of course.

It does look like the palace.

Sadly this building is now a dispensary with a large red ugly sign and then they tore out the walkway in front and put blacktop all the way to the front of the building for a parking lot.
