Weekend in Vegas! (Part 4)... and Skywatch Friday

One last "tourist photo" from my trip to Las Vegas last weekend (see the preceding posts for more). This sits in front of what was once the legendary Riviera Casino, which was shuttered this spring after 60 years on the strip. It'll soon become part of the Las Vegas Convention Center, which is kind of sad. The Riviera was one of the last few "old school" hotel casinos left on the strip. Circus Circus, Caesars Palace, the Flamingo and Harrahs still exist, but almost everything else is modern and completely over the top, like the Luxor, the Wynn, the Paris, the Bellagio, the Venetian, the Aria. Gone are the Sahara, the Aladdin, the Star Dust, the Sands. It's definitely a different town from years past.

As for today's photo: it took me quite a while to figure out exactly what this thing is! Vegas by day and Vegas by night are two entirely different animals. You have to use your imagination when you're looking at the strip in the bright light of day, because it is truly meant to be experienced after darkness falls. I've finally figured out that this contraption is a sign! You can see that the front section of the ring is black; it must light up with scrolling letters at night. And all of those tubes circling the vertical curved "spikes" within the circle must be flashing neon lights. I feel so smart to have figured that out! Ha! (And just out of curiosity, I searched on YouTube until I found a video that showed this thing in action. You can find it HERE, at about the 8:55 mark -- mute your speakers unless you want to listen to some truly annoying music.)

Vegas has always struck me as a place tearing down and then building new and more over the top constantly.
