Wildfire in Custer County

I took this picture a couple of months ago in Palmer Park, and its message still applies. We have had almost no meaningful precipitation in weeks, even months. Every night the TV meteorologists warn us of the fire danger. Bone dry conditions and high winds make ideal conditions for a blaze. Unfortunately, as of yesterday we've got a big one burning right now in Custer County, about 75 miles southwest of Colorado Springs in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountain range. The high winds have made it very difficult to battle effectively. Within a matter of hours, the wildfire had grown to over 11,000 acres, and today it sits at close to 16,000. Two homes have already burned down, and there is currently 0% containment. Thankfully there's been no loss of life as people began evacuating yesterday in both Custer and Pueblo counties. It amazing how quickly the authorities organize and get the word out in these situations. Kudos to them! Let's hope the hotshots can get this wildfire under control soon! You can stay up-to-date on the situation HERE.

The fire fighters have a big job there. I hope it gets settled down fast.
