This sculpture, entitled The End of an Era, lives on the south lawn of the Pioneers Museum. I'm not sure why the artist, George W. Lundeen, gave it that title, since skiing has endured as probably the most popular sport in Colorado for generations! And no doubt it will be for generations to come.
Here's the skier from directly underneath. Gotta love that sweater, it's a very 1960 skiing getup for certain!

Yes, the title intrigued me to read more. Like you, it seems to evade me as when I think of Colorado, I think of skiing.
It does seem an odd title, but quite a formidable sculpture!
