There were lots of great old cars at the Denver Modernism Show this year, but this one's the utmost! It's a Dodge La Femme, and they were only produced in 1955 and '56. As the name suggests, it was a marketing ploy aimed directly at women. A car just for the ladies! That was probably a pretty revolutionary thing back then. The La Femme's features included a purse that fit snugly into the back of the passenger seat, a matching umbrella and rain bonnet, and several gold toned accessories: a compact, lipstick case, cigarette case, comb and so on. I know that we would consider all of this sexist in today's world, but at the time I'm sure it was appreciated and aspired to by many women.
The owner of this rare car is named Debbie and she dressed to match her automobile! (I will share pictures of her in an upcoming Sunday Style, promise.) It's quite a collectible; she told me that at one point Jay Leno offered to buy it from her. I guess he found another one somewhere, because he's known to have a La Femme in his collection now. Debbie has owned this awesome car for many years, and she bought the camper featured in yesterday's post only a few months ago and immediately had it perfectly restored too. Clearly she has a love for the 1950s and I definitely appreciate that!
