Today I did some family portraits at Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and the four year-old among us pointed out this interesting bird on the quarry pond. After we oooohed and aaaaahed for a minute over its beautiful black plumage, we got back to the business of taking pictures, but when we walked past it again I took a snapshot because I had never seen such a bird before. After a little internet sleuthing, I learned that it was an American Coot, a.k.a. a mud hen. It's so pretty! Even though I've never seen one around here, apparently Colorado is part of its natural range. I love how wetlands always attract the most interesting birds.
