Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

When All Else Fails, Take Pictures

I mentioned in yesterday's post that our quest to find North Clear Creek Falls on July 4th took a while. This is because we were under the impression that it was just outside the town limits of Creede, but this is not the case. It's more like 20 or 25 miles away. You take the Silver Thread Scenic Byway out of town (and trust me when I say it's very scenic indeed), then look for the sign and turn right, and there it is. The falls are not visible at all from the road, and there's only the one sign to tell you where to turn, so if you don't see the sign, you're screwed. Which is exactly what what happened. Eventually we found ourselves cresting not just Spring Creek Pass but also Slumgullion Pass. In fact, we overshot the falls by about 20 miles! A little past the summit of Slumgullion Pass there's a pullover where you can get an amazing view of Lake San Cristobal (above), but more importantly for us in that moment, we finally got enough of a phone signal there for us to search for driving directions. I took a picture of the lake while Pat used the Google. The rest of these pictures were taken either elsewhere on Slumgullion Pass or somewhere on the Silver Thread Scenic Byway. Not a bad place to get lost, right? Unless you're hanging out with Alferd Packer, that is. Then maybe not so much. 😉

At the summit of Slumgullion Pass, 11,530 feet above sea level. As you can see, a lot of the trees were bare because for years now there's been a pine beetle infestation affecting large swaths of Colorado.
Despite the apparent lifelessness of the trees, large bird aeries were everywhere. We did spot at least four eagles on this trip. Magnificent creatures.

I swear this was taken in a parking lot, somewhere along the scenic byway. What a beautiful part of Colorado! You should visit it sometime!

Ha. When I saw those falls, we were using my husband's memory and a big paper state map, the kind unfolds. Those were the days. Glad you finally found them but you had consolation in roaming some beautiful country for sure.

@JudithK as we were doubling back from Scumgullion Pass, we were actually saying that we wished we'd had a paper map in the car with us. We do actually own a Colorado map but I guess it's somewhere in the house, exactly where it was least useful. Ha! Into the car it shall go.

I can see you now, unfolding and searching....and refolding.
