For lack of a better photo today, here is one of local artist Chris Weed's big sunflower sculptures. This was taken in one of the city's demonstration gardens back in May. I do love the combination of bright blue and yellow! I guess we'll go with Ukraine, since the sunflower is their national flower.
This was taken in Cheyenne Cañon a couple of weeks ago, and it even though the water is clear, the rocks and stream bed are so brown it just looked kind of "blah" to me. Don't believe Paul Simon when he sings that everything looks worse in black and white. He's full of baloney.

Spotted in the lake at the Broadmoor a couple of days ago: a duck's bottom! Or is it? As you know, the fabled "duckling" in the story turned out to be a beautiful swan, just like this guy.
We saw this classic downtown a few days ago and I had to stop for a photo since it reminded me of the "Greased Lightnin'" car from Grease. Of course that was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid! How could tween-aged Tamera resist John Travolta, after all? Ha!

I spent a few days in California again last week, and took a few snaps for you when opportunities arose. Here's one from the Dana Point Ocean Institute. Too bad it wasn't a pelican perched on the railing, but crows are cool too. I have other, slightly less kind thoughts about seagulls, though. Ha.

Seen a few days ago on Uintah heading west under the interstate. I must have driven this route a hundred times since the first of the year. Either I'm a completely oblivious driver (I hope not!) or someone scrawled this message only recently. Better late than never, I suppose.

I admire the cleverness of creating signs or messages that allow you to keep your hands free, like the hoodie in the photo above (I need that!), or headwear, or sandwich boards. I think the next time I participate in a protest I'm going to try the sandwich board approach.
I hope you're enjoying all the protest signs. I took all of these with my cell phone, by the way. I hate to be encumbered by an actual camera during an event like this, but on the other hand I think my cell phone takes lousy pictures by comparison. Oh well! Which one of these signs do you like best? My favorite is definitely the one at the top of this post. That took some effort!

Well here we are again, the first day of a new month, which means it's Theme Day for participating City Daily Photo bloggers. This month the theme is double. I brained on this for days without coming up with any decent ideas, then I decided that the force was with me and a great subject would simply present itself if I let it. I was right. I went to my friend JB's today so she could join me on a dog walk, and as we wandered around her neighborhood these two nearly identical dachshunds barked excitedly at Frodo from their vantage point on the back of the couch. How perfect was this? I had already taken what I thought was an excellent photo for the theme only moments before (and I will blog that image tomorrow), but this was so much better, and funnier too.

Alas and alack, the Broncos lost the championship playoff game to the Patriots on Sunday, so our Superbowl hopes have been dashed. (I know this is probably only interesting to a few of my readers. Ha!) The game was played in Denver, and as you can see, the weather wasn't terribly cooperative -- so much so that they had to use a snow blower on the field so that the lines would be visible. Also, our superstar quarterback was sidelined with a fractured ankle, so the backup quarterback was called upon to play in this high pressure situation. He gave it a mighty effort and we only lost by three points. Even though the outcome was a little disappointing, this has been an amazing winning football season and a big thrill for us fans! Can't wait for next year!
When all else fails, put a bird on it! In this case, a giant "chainsaw art" eagle does the trick. You can find this artistically rendered raptor on Holiday and Circle, near the country club.
Pat and I love sending and receiving Christmas cards, but this year we got a little behind on Christmas in general, thus the rush to get cards addressed and mailed in time was a little stressful. On top of that, Pat had a hard time finding cards that fit our sentiment and aesthetic while still being reasonably affordable. We decided to be smart about it for next year: buy Christmas cards now, just after Christmas when they're on sale, and mail them at the beginning of December. Our goal was to take care of card shopping over the weekend, so we stopped in at Barnes & Noble yesterday and were surprised to see how crowded it was, although you can't tell from this photo. As it turns out, everything in the store was on sale, not just Christmas cards, and plenty of people were there taking advantage of the bargains. You'd think they'd be tired of shopping by now, but I guess not. As for me, I was just grateful that I wasn't subjected to any more Christmas music. 😉
Only five days to Christmas! A couple of weekends ago I went with friends to see the Ho Ho at the Millibo, which is an annual comedic sort of cabaret with very adult humor (definitely not for kids!). Most of the performers are friends of mine and this event never fails to be hilarious, but this year it was extra, extra funny. Or maybe we all just really needed to laugh more than usual, all things considered. Here's "Stephen Miller" about to shoot Santa (with a large candycane) because he perceives Santa to be an intruder. Sigh. Why does this actually seem like something Stephen Miller would do, except with a real gun? We are living in strange times, my friends. Anyway, I can't wait for Christmas and for the days to start getting longer again, let's look on the bright side!

Have you ever seen A Christmas Story? It's only the best Christmas movie ever made! For the uninitiated, it chronicles one Christmas of a boy named Ralphie in 1940-ish Indiana. It's very nostalgic and also very, very funny. If you grew up there, you know this film totally nails winter in the American midwest. As for me, I was born in Wisconsin, so believe me I get it! Anyway, in the film there's a hilarious vignette in which Ralphie's father has won a rather unsightly lamp in the shape of a woman's leg clad in a fishnet stocking. Naturally the mom is horrified while Ralphie and his little brother are titillated. Worse yet, Dad proudly positions the lamp in the front window of their home, in full view of the street. Ultimately Mom wins the battle by "accidentally" breaking the lamp. So funny! This house on Nevada Avenue displays a replica of the infamous "leg lamp" every Christmas, and I managed to get a shot of it this year.
