Independence Pass (Part 2)
Here are a few more snapshots from our little day trip last week. As you can see, not a speck of snow anywhere. That's very unusual, but then again we're in a historic drought, and even our high mountain passes aren't immune. Even the picturesque little tarn at the summit was bone dry. Sad face! Hopefully this coming winter will bring tons of needed snow. Fingers crossed.

Independence Pass (Part 1)
Last Wednesday, Pat and I (plus our dog Frodo) headed for the mountains for some stress relief. The destination was Independence Pass, about 130 miles away. It's such a beautiful area -- especially in autumn. The town of Aspen is a few miles beyond the other side of the pass but this time we decided not to go quite that far. On the pass, there are many great spots where you can park your car and admire the breathtaking vistas. Here are some variations of the same gorgeous view. I imagine that when people think of Colorado, this is what they see in their mind's eye. I love living here.
More tomorrow!

June 2026 Theme Day: Sky
Well I took an unannounced break from the blog all of last week. It just sort of happened, I didn't plan to go AWOL! I was on "staycation" and busied myself with all kinds of projects around the house and garden. The weather was rainy for several days on end and that made it difficult to take any pictures, then I was scurrying to catch up on outside projects when the sun finally came out. So basically, I didn't have any pictures to share here. Anyway, I just realized that today is the first day of June, so that means it's Theme Day! This month the theme is sky. I did a little digging in my archives and there were lots of photos that fit the bill, but I thought this one was a standout. It was taken on January 29, 2021, and it sure looks like I was standing in the parking lot of our downtown library to get this awesome view of the Peak.
For more takes on the theme, check out the City Daily Photo portal HERE. Enjoy!

Alamosa (Part 4)
Another couple of snapshots that I grabbed in Blanca, about 20 miles outside of Alamosa. The mountains in this part of Colorado are called the Spanish Peaks (part of the larger Sangre de Cristo mountain range), and as you can see, even the most mundane street view has a breathtaking backdrop.

A Sight for Sore Eyes
It's nice to see a blanket of snow on the peak, even though it'll disappear soon. It's been an unnervingly warm and dry winter and we're definitely staring down the barrel at water restrictions in the coming months. The last several days brought us chilly, soggy and snowy weather, which will definitely help, but it's not enough. Send more please, Mother Nature.

X Marks the Spot
Yesterday we took a little drive through the Garden of the Gods, something we haven't done in a while. I used to go there about once a month but it's been so overrun with tourists lately that I've been avoiding it. In wintertime it's far less crowded, though, so it's a much better experience and it's prettier to boot. The sky was clear blue yesterday and the peak had a tic tac toe board of contrails over it. I'll show you a different view of the same thing tomorrow.

It's New Year's Eve!
Good riddance to 2025, the year of perpetual health problems and stress! I wanted to end the year with a scenic image but didn't have time to get out there with a camera today, so here's a pretty snap from November 26, 2023. I'm sure you recognize this view! Have a happy New Year, everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving 2025!
It's time again for my favorite holiday! What's yours? I took this photo today around 2:30 PM. It was hazy over the mountain but still the view was beautiful. To my US readers, I hope today has been lovely, the food was delicious, the company was delightful, and your football team won!

Well Hello There
I haven't been very consistent about blogging the last few months, mainly because I've been very stressed out and have also been dealing with seemingly one annoying health problem after another this year. I won't apologize since that's nothing to be sorry about; instead I'll thank you if you've been faithfully checking my blog for new content over the last week. I last left you with some skirmishing hummingbirds at Helen Hunt Falls nine days ago. Here's what was just a few yards beyond them.

Possibly the World's Most Scenic PokéStop
I came across this new "PokéStop" the other day in Monument Valley Park. If you're a Pokémon player, you know what that means. I have to say, this must be one of the most scenic PokéStops in the world. I hope the players who find it pause for a minute to take in the view, like the folks on this bench are doing.

The View
For Christmas I not only received a new Nikon mirrorless body, I also received a 70-200mm F 2.8 lens to replace a very old and failing version of the same lens. Santa (ahem, Pat) was indeed very generous! I really haven't had a chance to test out either of them in the field until today, when I used the lens on an older body to do some head shots for a client. Afterward I wanted to test how it would do on a subject very far off while zoomed out to the maximum, something my sad old lens could no longer pull off. Behold the awesome sharpness of this shot! Of course having such a beautiful subject doesn't hurt, either.

A Good Day!
Today was my birthday! The weather was mild and sunny, which I appreciated since it's often cold on my birthday. And although I kept quite busy, I managed to squeeze in a quick five minute detour into Palmer Park, where I photographed this lovely view. Not a bad birthday present from Mother Nature!
