Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

An Unfortunate Misspelling

I was driving east on Fountain yesterday afternoon, in a big hurry to get to the shredding facility before their closing time, when I noticed this sign near the Hillside Community Center. Despite the urgency of my errand, I just couldn't keep driving. I had to stop the car and get a picture. Um, I think they meant to put pantry, not panty. Or at least I hope so! Although several of my friends have pointed out that there is such a thing as edible panties! 😉

Bits and Bobs

I found myself at Hillside Gardens again recently, for a wedding of course. I actually took these three pictures at the wedding rehearsal and not on the big day. I rarely go to rehearsals, but I was glad I went to this one as it gave me a chance to just wander around and snap pictures afterward. For the uninitiated, this wedding venue features found objects like these, mostly all treasures from its previous iteration as a junkyard, and maybe a few other bits and bobs that the owner has picked up here and there over the years.

Imagine doing laundry with a machine like this! My grandma did, her entire life. There's rather a big collection of ancient wringer washers sitting around forlornly in one of the lesser traveled spots there.

Hillside Gardens (Part 3)

Last shot from Hillside Gardens. Here's the beautiful fountain next to the pavilion. Whenever I shoot a wedding there, I have to get a picture of this, it's so pretty.

Hillside Gardens (Part 2)

Another shot from Hillside Gardens, when I was there to shoot a wedding last month. This is one of my favorite venues because it's funky, not just pretty. It was once a junkyard, and the owner, Larry, has transformed it into a beautiful space, juxtaposing classic garden features against found objects (i.e. "garbage") from its junkyard days, such as vintage washing machines, vehicles, and tools. It also doesn't hurt that the view is amazing.

Hillside Gardens (Part 1)

I shot a wedding at Hillside Gardens last month and snapped a few pictures for the blog while I was at it. More info on this quirky venue later. Today I'll just tease you with this reflecting pool that's filled with old bowling balls instead of water.

Color Blocked School (Part 3)

Just a couple more pictures of Coperni2 Charter School, which has such cheerfully painted buildings. This must be so fun for the kids. 😊

Color Blocked School (Part 2)

More brightly painted buildings at Coperni2 Charter School in the Hillside neighborhood. So cheerful!

Color Blocked School (Part 1)

There's a cute charter school called Coperni2 in the Hillside neighborhood, not far from our house. All the buildings at Coperni2 are painted in bright, cheerful colors. I've been meaning to take pictures of it for a while now, and we finally got a chance to do it on August 16th. As you can see, the landscaping is looking a little overgrown here, but I'm sure that's because the school year hadn't started yet. I'll post more pictures of the cheerful buildings at Coperni2 tomorrow.

Untitled

I couldn't think of a catchy title for this photo. Any ideas? These painted rocks can be found at an elementary school in the Hillside neighborhood, not far from our house. All of the buildings at the school are painted in these same bright colors. I took a few pictures of them and will post them over the next few days.

The Leon Young Pavilion

Pat and I spied this sign while driving through the Hillside neighborhood yesterday. I wasn't sure what the Leon Young Pavilion actually was, so I looked it up. Turns out that it's the brightly painted wall at the bottom end of Shooks Run Park, and I've driven past it only about a zillion times in my life, I just didn't know what it was called! The pavilion is named after our city's first (and only) African American mayor, and right now it's in a pretty sorry state. This neighborhood is fairly low income, and though it's seen some gentrification in recent years, it still has a long way to go. The section of Shooks Run Park in question is looking a little worse for wear. Hillside residents want to restore the pavilion and their share of Shooks Run Park, but have run into some frustrating roadblocks with the city. You can read all about it HERE.
