Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

Cool Runnings

The last couple of days have been very grey and dull, and today was even quite chilly. I don't think it got over 55° F (13° C) around here. Not exactly incentive to go out and take pictures! So here's a throwaway shot from Nancy Lewis Park last Friday. Yes, I know that moving water is a frequent subject for me. That's because I really like to take pictures of moving water, duh. 😉

Abloom

If you're in the area, you should take a detour to Nancy Lewis Park sometime soon. All the water lilies are blooming and it's so pretty!

Tiger Mom

Yesterday morning I killed time before an appointment by going to Palmer Park for a few minutes, and after that appointment I stopped by Nancy Lewis Park, where I found this momma duck keeping guard over her brood as they foraged for snacks. I think I count 11 ducklings in this picture. Then it was off to yet another appointment for me. Yesterday was a busy day!

Speaking of Waterfowl

Here is a cute pair of mallards that I spotted at Nancy Lewis Park on June 7th of last year, a much warmer day indeed.

This Life Is for the Birds

The waterfowl at Nancy Lewis Park have it pretty good! It's not a large lake, but it's picturesque and there are always people about to give you food, despite the signs imploring folks not to. The birds here seems to be quite happy with all the snacks and the nice view.

I took Frodo for a walk at Nancy Lewis Park yesterday, and brought a camera along with me since it was such a pretty day. Snow is coming tomorrow but we've had really warm weather the last several days and I have been trying to take advantage of it during my limited free time. I really enjoy this park even though it's more "civilized" than the natural spaces that I prefer. I'll have to bring Frodo there again soon, he likes it too.

I was a busy photographer over the weekend, shooting both a wedding and some maternity portraits. I did take a camera out and about with me yesterday but forgot to take any pictures for the blog, so to the archives we go. Here are some cute ducks at Nancy Lewis Park taken on June 7, 2019.

A Palate Cleanser

I'm a little late with today's post, since I've been at my computer all day editing a complex shoot I did a few days ago. Finally I have a free minute! I thought that after the anger and energy of the last few posts, I'd share this tranquil spring moment at Nancy Lewis Park as a bit of a palate cleanser.

Strange Tableau

I came across this strangely adorable tableau at Nancy Lewis Park the other day. This pair never moved from their positions the entire time I was there. In fact, they didn't move, period. She sat in the shade and scrolled through her phone, he napped on the ground in the heat of the sun. They never looked at each other or spoke. I encountered them on the way in and again on the way out, and it was like they were statues.

Don't Feed the Ducks and Geese

In order to get to this picturesque spot in Nancy Lewis Park where she's feeding the ducks and geese with her grandson, this woman had to walk past not one, but two prominent signs that literally say "Don't Feed the Ducks and Geese." I find it hard to believe that she somehow didn't see them, she simply chose to ignore their message because she wanted to do what she wanted to do. Of course she was feeding the waterfowl the worst possible thing: white bread. When I mentioned to her that bread is especially harmful, she seemed quite shocked. She asked me what would be a better choice, and I told her grapes. Her response to that was actually kind of funny; she wanted to know how the birds can get at the grapes when the grapes inevitably sink! Uh, ducks and geese can put their heads underwater, lady. That's how they naturally eat when people aren't throwing crappy human food at them. Sigh. Please read and heed the signs, people, and even though it's fun to feed the animals, it's truly not good for them, so just don't do it!

As I type this, winter is moving in. A drastic drop in temperature is afoot: today it was 80°, and tomorrow it should be about 30°. On Friday they're saying it'll be more like 19°. I guess I wasn't quite ready for this yet! Here's a picture from Nancy Lewis Park on September 29th, a beautiful, warm, picturesque fall day.

Flight Risk

Today I was at Nancy Lewis Park for a few minutes, where I captured these high fliers enjoying a sunny afternoon.

Don't Feed the Ducks

A momma duck and her perfect little brood in Nancy Lewis park several days ago, along with signs exhorting visitors not to feed them. I think people must ignore the signs, though, because she gave me the stink eye when I didn't offer snacks!

I went back to Nancy Lewis Park a few days ago to see if I could spot the elusive blue heron, but alas I was denied again. On the upside, the water lilies were blooming and they made for a nice picture on their own.

Duck Duck Go

My brother Chuck told me he'd heard there has been a great blue heron hanging out at Nancy Lewis Park lately, so today I stopped by there to see if I could get a shot of it. Alas, no such luck, but I did find some other photogenic waterfowl! This pair seemed to be enjoying the spray from the fountain in the middle of the pond. I wasn't exactly sure what kind of ducks they were, so I looked it up and I think they are just regular ol' mallards sporting eclipse plumage, which is curious because from what I'm reading, eclipse plumage doesn't happen until after breeding season, and there were other male mallards on the lake with the deep green feathers that we're all familiar with. Someone who knows stuff about ducks, please explain!

Nancy Lewis Park

A client and regular reader of this blog, Katie, recently turned me on to this great park! Years ago it was a turf farm, and at some point in the last couple of decades, a developer built some assisted living townhomes and apartments on the land, leaving plenty of space for this nice park. Ironically this is all quite close to my studio, but I never bothered to check it out until Katie described it to me and showed me a picture. It's so nice! There's even a meditation garden. What a lovely spot! Thank you so much for inspiring me to finally explore it, Katie!
