Bus + Fire Truck = Big Bang

On Saturday afternoon I was downtown, and over an entire block was inaccessible because a fire truck had collided with a bus, both vehicles at full speed. (Actually it was a Bustang.) From what I understand, the fire truck was on its way to a medical emergency and struck the bus at the intersection of Tejon and Bijou. For a couple of blocks in all directions barriers had been set up so it was impossible to park nearby, but it was easy enough to approach it on foot. Apparently several people were injured but none of them too seriously.

A more or less life sized statue inspired (apparently) by early residents of Colorado Springs. I don't think they represent actual historic individuals. You can find it on Tejon Street a little south of Colorado. I have no idea what it's called but I can tell you that the lantern works.

International Women’s Day March

On Sunday we went for brunch downtown. As we were leaving, this large gaggle of protestors came marching down the sidewalk. I didn't even realize that there was a protest planned, otherwise I would have participated!

First Congregational

Here's one of our historic downtown churches, First Congregational. I've blogged about it many times. This impressive building with its distinctively massive stone columns was completed in 1889 and sits on the northwest corner of Tejon and Saint Vrain, in the Near North End neighborhood. According to Wikipedia, it's listed on the National Historic Register and "Its design is in the Richardsonian Romanesque style and is constructed of Colorado Wall Mountain Tuft (rhyolite) quarried near Castle Rock, Colorado." It cost $40,000 to build, which is somewhat hilarious until you do the math: that's about $1,409,226.09 in today's money! Anyway, I think it's gorgeous, and having documented my share of weddings at First Congregational, I can tell you that the inside of it is beautiful as well.

We've been enjoying absolutely perfect weather lately and I'm not complaining. Daytime temperatures in the seventies or low eighties, the occasional rainstorm. Everyone wants to be outside enjoying it. This was taken on the corner of Tejon and Colorado on Sunday.

I've featured this proud looking pig on the blog before, but it was years ago so I figure it's time I showed him to you again. Cute! You can find him on South Tejon Street about a half block below Colorado Avenue.

The iron fence that encloses Grace Episcopal Church on North Tejon features this lovely old gate. I wonder how old it is.

Home Away from Home

Here's the charming logo for Poor Richard's, my favorite local restaurant going way back to my college years. I used to spend a lot of time here, but not as much nowadays since I'm always so busy! Still, whenever I go, it's like I'm home. Poor Richard's is not just a restaurant, it's a whole clutch of small enterprises all in a row. There's the restaurant, then there's Little Richard's (only the best toy store in Colorado!), Rico's Wine Bar, and Poor Richard's Books. All of them are interconnected so you can walk through from one to the other, and all are owned by the wonderful Richard Skorman. If you're ever in town, you should definitely stop here.

When the Sun's Out, the Top's Down

As you probably deduced from yesterday's Sunday Style post featuring people in shirtsleeves and shorts, it was gorgeous out -- sunny and 60° F. That kind of weather on a Sunday in February brings out the vintage car owners, like this guy and his perfect Chevy BelAir convertible. Not two minutes after I snapped this photo, a gorgeous classic Chevrolet Corvette Stingray cruised past me. It was a perfect day to take the garage queen out for a spin, that's for sure.

Spied downtown today! Pink Docs to match the pink shirt. Cute! Overalls are back in again. I think they're comfy right up to the moment you need to pee, then it turns into a whole other situation.

Tiger Pride

The Colorado College mascot is a tiger, and as you can see, the school colors are black and gold. This guy sits in front of the new ice arena on Tejon and Cache la Poudre. Unfortunately the college leveled an entire city block of cool old buildings to make way for the gargantuan new home for their celebrated hockey team. I'm still bummed about that.

As promised, some of Tejon Street's lovely old Victorian mansions all duded up for Halloween! Some of the homeowners really go all out with the spookiness, and others just hint at it. More tomorrow.
