Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

Tiger Pride

The Colorado College mascot is a tiger, and as you can see, the school colors are black and gold. This guy sits in front of the new ice arena on Tejon and Cache la Poudre. Unfortunately the college leveled an entire city block of cool old buildings to make way for the gargantuan new home for their celebrated hockey team. I'm still bummed about that.

Love Locks

The footbridge over Cache la Poudre Street is sporting a few "love locks" lately, probably inspired by the famous Pont des Arts in Paris. There are only a handful. The idea doesn't seem to have taken off and frankly I wouldn't want to see this bridge covered in locks, romantic as that may seem. There are compelling reasons why it's a bad idea. I like the bridge just fine without locks on it.

Summer

The last several days have been oppressively hot, so when things cooled down considerably today, my friend JB and I took advantage of it by going for a walk through Shooks Run. Here she is crossing the pedestrian bridge over Cache la Poudre Street.

Student art

The concrete buttresses under the pedestrian bridge over Cache la Poudre Street are painted with murals by students from nearby North Middle School, with help from local artist Steve Wood. Very cheerful!

Hurricane force winds in Colorado Springs

If you live here, I don't have to tell you that yesterday was obnoxiously windy. And when I say obnoxious, I mean Category 2 hurricane, record breaking kind of wind. There was a 101 MPH gust recorded at Cheyenne Mountain. Tens of thousands of people in our city, including my brother Chuck, have gone without power for most of the day, with utilities crews unable to repair the damage because the high winds were too dangerous to work in. On Facebook, my friends are reporting damage to their cars and homes. I've seen photo after photo of tree-flattened vehicles, torn roofs, broken windows, even itinerant trampolines! At some point during the day, the Colorado Department of Transportation declared a ban on all high profile vehicles, so all the school buses in town were grounded and parents scrambled to pick up their kids. There were multiple traffic snarls because of overturned 18-wheelers. (I'm hearing that up to 36 semi trucks flipped over in the wind. I can't confirm that number but holy mackerel!) Roads were blocked off around town as emergency crews dealt with downed trees and/or power lines. The county courthouse was evacuated because part of the roof was torn off. KRDO posted a video HERE of some of the madness. You should watch it, it'll "blow" your mind. (Pun intended!) And HERE's another crazy video of shingles flying off a building on the south side of town. In short, this windstorm can only be described as catastrophic.

As for me, I had a doctor appointment in the morning, and I decided to drive around afterward to try and document the windstorm in progress. This was a terrible idea. It felt like I was either going to be blown off the road or that at any moment a tree would topple over and flatten me inside my car. Heck, I drove for over a mile before I even got to a working traffic signal (and the drivers here are baaaaad -- trusting their judgement at a major intersection with a non-functioning traffic light is nerve wracking). I took most of these pictures from my car, because I didn't want to get out of it for fear of getting brained by a flying branch or road sign or poodle. Downtown was nearly deserted (this made it very easy to take pictures from my car, I must admit -- I could simply stop in the middle of the road with total impunity). I've never seen so many empty parking spots! Even the ever present panhandlers were absent. I did get out of my car for a few minutes, to pick up a sandwich at Wooglin's, and while I was there I dashed across the street and took a picture of the giant trees whipping in the wind on the CC campus, and I made a little video too. I'm happy to report that I made it home in one piece after that. So far no tree has landed on my car, our roof is still attached to our house, and our fence is leaning dramatically but it didn't fall over (at least not yet), so that's good. It's supposed to be very windy for the next few days. Hang on to your hats, Colorado Springsians! It's gonna be a long week!

At Wooglin's Deli. Glad she didn't blow over -- I nearly did, just trying to get back to my car!

This guy braved the wind to deal with a giant tree that had fallen (shown at the top of this post), also at Cache la Poudre and Wahsatch.
An enormous tree blew over at Help of Christians Roman Catholic Church on Cache la Poudre just east of Institute. It was huge. Poor tree! And as you can see, this man was not wearing a coat. Even though the winds were gusting continuously at 70 to 80 MPH, it was weirdly warm outside, around 55°.
You can get a better idea of it from this shot. I'm sad to see such a beautiful old tree lost!
The sisters at Help of Christians kindly brought water to the men who were working to clear away the downed tree. I thought this nun was going to take flight! (Remember that TV show? It was silly but I loved it when I was a kid. )
A few blocks west of my house, this minivan on Bijou Street had a close call. Look at that huge tree! It actually blocked the eastbound lane. Somehow it missed both the minivan and those power lines. Whew!
Close call indeed! The owner of this vehicle must be so relieved.

Last but not least, here's a little video I made at CC. It's shaky because I was getting blown about. Turn up the volume to get a better sense of what it was like. Look at all the flying debris. I had to wear eye protection. Crazy!

Spring in the garden

We paid a visit to the Demonstration Garden in Monument Valley Park last Sunday. All the spring blooming plants were in full flower and it was lovely! To find the Demonstration Garden, drive west on Cache la Poudre Street from Cascade Avenue; at the three way stop continue west, over the bridge. You'll see it on the right just after the bridge, where the road makes a sharp right turn.
Last but not least, this permanent resident of the garden! :^)

March 2015 Theme Day: Aging

It's the start of the month, and that means it's another Theme Day for City Daily Photo bloggers! This month's theme is aging. A full workload and the recent spate of chilly and snowy weather have largely kept me from getting outdoors and exploring with my camera, however Pat and I did find time the other day to track down this old log cabin that I spied a couple of months ago in an alley just south of Cache la Poudre and west of Institute. I have no idea what year it was built, but it looks like it must have been one of the original buildings in the neighborhood -- maybe even before you could have called it a neighborhood! Perhaps it dates back to the area's pioneer days, before the city was founded. I don't know anything about this intriguing little cabin, even what the address is. In fact, it probably doesn't technically have an address, because it sits behind someone's house, so it's likely considered to be a garage or even a lowly shed. Being so completely in the dark about it is driving me insane! I want to know the history of it! Was it someone's home? Was it a barn? It looks like some updates have been made to it, such as the newer barn door and a rather incongruous, tiny vinyl window on the north-facing side. I assume the original window in that spot must have been equally tiny.

Below is a closer view of where the old logs are joined at the corner. It really seems to be old world craftsmanship. I will do my best to find more information, and when I do, I'll post an update!

Busker

I came across this happy guy, Chris, busking outside the 7-11 at Cache la Poudre and Nevada yesterday afternoon with his friend Cailyn. What a little treat! He had a great voice! It was a good day to be outdoors, singing a song. Thanks for the picture, guys!

Divine Redeemer Catholic School

The shrine on the west-facing facade of Divine Redeemer Catholic School on the corner of Logan and Cache la Poudre. I think this school was built around 1958, and the mural surrounding the statue really has that mid-century vibe. I love it. It's so cool.

Even the trees felt the chill!

Well it's been a chilly week! Yesterday we finally made it up into the 30s, but earlier in the week we were seeing only single digits. Somebody on Cache la Poudre Street and Royer felt that their tree needed a crocheted "sweater". I love it!

Another photo from Saturday's bike ride (see yesterday's post). This one was taken by Pat, from the bicycle/footbridge over Cache la Poudre Street in the Shooks Run neighborhood.  It seems we weren't the only people with bicycling on our minds.

Huh?

I found this funny sign the other day in front of the Colorado Springs Running Company, on the corner of Tejon and Cache la Poudre. Huh? I think the sign underneath must say "fines doubled for speeding". "Sidewalk closed for speeding" doesn't make a whole lot of sense!

Cache la Poudre Street mural (Part 3)

Here is artist Steve Wood's dedication in thanks for his mural on Cache la Poudre Street. I think it's nice that he did this, naming names for all of posterity, and I think it's especially nice that he painted it instead of sticking a bronze plaque up there. It just seems more heartfelt.

Cache la Poudre Street mural (Part 2)

Here's the south section of Steve Wood's street mural, "Now & Then", on Cache la Poudre Street downtown. I like the snowboarder!

Cache la Poudre Street mural

If you drive west on Cache la Poudre Street downtown, just before you get to El Paso Street you'll drive under a footbridge that's been there for ages. About a decade ago, local artist Steve Wood painted a mural on both sides of the concrete butresses that support the footbridge. Even though Steve is a friend of a friend, I must confess that, although I've admired the artwork as I sped past, I never took the time to really look at it, so today I stopped the car and took a few snaps. Apparently it's called "Now & Then", and it depicts images of early Colorado Springs juxtaposed with the present. Today's photo shows the north side of the street.

Steve's painting style is playful and sort of primitive. His mural is a whimsical addition to the Shooks Run neighborhood.

My favorite street

I have a favorite street in Colorado Springs: Cache la Poudre at Prospect. I much prefer it going westward rather than eastward (though that's nice too), and I especially love it in the summertime in the late afternoon/early evening. There is a section a few blocks long that is like a peaceful green tunnel. I have always loved this short stretch of Cache la Poudre, ever since I discovered it when I was in college. When I was in my 20's I lived just a few blocks west of here, at Cache and Weber, for seven years. I do miss the neighborhood even though I love where I live now.

Today I took my vintage BMW for a spin and went down my favorite street. (This photo was snapped through my dirty windshield!) Can you see why I love this section of Cache la Poudre Street so much?
