Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

I'm Back!

Hello, readers! It's very uncharacteristic of me to be absent from the blog at all, let alone a week, but I've been so very sick that I won't apologize for not entertaining you these last several days. The culprit: a whopper of a case of Influenza A. It started seven days ago and I'm still sick and weak, if you can believe it! Pat took me to the urgent care clinic on Sunday and they put me on Tamiflu straight away, and I cannot imagine how bad it would have been if not for modern medicine. At least I didn't end up in the hospital!

Anyway, I've done very little the past week other than sleep, read books and watch TV (but mostly sleep, sleep and more sleep). I left you hanging last weekend with my mention of big trouble at the Union Printers Home. You can read about this beautiful building's history HERE. It started off as a retirement home for typographical printers, and for many years it's been an assisted living facility for the elderly and infirm. Unfortunately, a recent tragedy is forcing the place to close down. One of the patients, an elderly woman (variously reported to be somewhere between 86 and 90 years old) got into an argument with a staff member and went outside to "cool down," so to speak. It was apparently after midnight and about 23° outside. No one thought to check on her, and she subsequently died of exposure. How absolutely horrible! I don't know how this oversight happened, but as I understand it they were understaffed. Of course this tragedy brought a glaring spotlight on the facility and it was deemed inadequate by several important standards, and no doubt the families of its patients immediately began looking for other options for their loved ones, so the upshot is that the nursing home will be closed very soon and the building will sit vacant.

Aside from the obviously tragic circumstance of the woman's accidental death, there is a whole other question of what will happen to this beautiful old structure and its grounds. I sincerely, sincerely, SINCERELY hope that it will not fall into the hands of some awful developer. My guess is that it's on the National Historic Register, which gives me hope, but it is a prime piece of real estate and there are some greedy people out there who probably can't wait to get their hands on it. Perhaps it will reopen as an assisted living facility soon, under new ownership and management. One can hope. 😢

Edit: Pat and I were discussing this situation over dinner, and after some internet sleuthing he found that the Union Printers Home is not on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's now in a very vulnerable position. This is obviously not a good situation and I will update the blog as things develop.

Sunday Style!

I rarely post my professional work on this blog, but this particular photo shoot featured some great clothes and styling so I figured I should share! I love this awesome boutique, Safron, in Old Colorado City, and this is the second shoot I've done for them. They have beautiful clothes and accessories. If you're in Colorado Springs, I highly recommend you go and check them out! Oh and you can see more images from this photo shoot HERE. Enjoy!

An Unfortunate Situation

I love this beautiful old building. Isn't it something? Unfortunately, the Union Printers Home is in a bit of a pickle at the moment, but since I seem to have come down with a whopper of a virus, I am too sick right now to explain the bad news. It will just have to wait until Monday's post. I'll put tomorrow's Sunday Style post on autopilot because I predict I'll be passed out in bed for most of the day. Good night!

'63 Caddy

Ah yes, remember when 2-door cars were 20 feet long, weighed over four thousand pounds and got under ten miles per gallon? I do! (Just barely!) This '63 Cadillac was parked outside Boonzaijer's Bakery on February 1st when I was there having a coffee with my friend Jennifer. How could I resist taking a picture?

Nolon House

Nolon House can be found less than a block from the Cliff House and next door to the Post Office in Manitou Springs. I've always wondered about this old mansion, so when I was at the Cliff House a couple of weeks ago I made it a point to grab some pictures. A few years ago Pat gave me a great book called Historic Homes of Colorado Springs and the Vicinity, and it has a section on Nolon House. I'll paraphrase what it says: Nolon House was built in 1890 for Edward Newton, owner of Newton Lumber Company, and it was originally called New Carlon. In 1900 it was bought by John and Mary Nolon and rechristened. Originally a Pony Express rider, Mr. Nolon made a fortune in Cripple Creek, running a saloon and gambling hall during the gold boom.

Nolon House's architectural style can be described as a blend of Queen Anne and gothic revival. As you can see, it's four stories tall and features an awesome cupola. The Nolon family sold the house in the mid 1940s, and since then it's been converted into apartments. It would be cool to live in this gorgeous, historic old home!

A View From the Bottom

The other day while heading to Old Colorado City I found myself stuck at Colorado and 21st for what seemed like an awfully long time. I entertained myself by taking a photo of Sacred Heart through my car's sunroof.

Sunday Style!

A few days ago I went for my annual appointment with my allergist, and she was wearing such awesome stockings and boots that I had to take a picture. I have the coolest allergist in the city!

I was out really late, so this blog post is coming past midnight -- I'm going to backdate it to yesterday so I'm not missing a day. Here's another snap I took in the Garden of the Gods last week. I was out with my camera almost every day this week but couldn't find much worthwhile to photograph, so this will have to do!

Another beautiful Old North End home, this one at 1629 N. Wood Avenue. Though large, I wouldn't describe it as a mansion. I couldn't find out much about this Queen Anne Victorian other than the fact that it was built in 1902 for a physician called Pliny Perkins. What a name!

Look What the Cat Brought In

This awesome mural decorates the building that houses Look What the Cat Brought In, a no-kill shelter on Boulder Street that specializes in cats that require extra time, medical attention and love before being put up for adoption. Many of the kitties they rescue come from hoarding situations. These guys are saints! And I love their mural, it's wonderful. You can learn more about this outstanding organization HERE, including how to donate or volunteer.

Another street shot, this one taken downtown on February 1st. It was one of those days that feel like summer in the middle of winter.

Snow Bear

Today was grey and dreary, but I had an errand to run in Manitou so I brought a camera with me. This black bear doesn't seem to mind the weather. It's snowing again if I type this, so tomorrow he'll be even more covered in snow.

One more picture of the Garden of the Gods taken on Wednesday! We got a ton of snow last night and today, so once again I worked from home. I've been concentrating very intensely on updating my website the last few days, so I haven't had much time for this blog. Maybe tomorrow I can get some new pictures with all this heavy snow covering the city. (But no promises! Ha ha!)

Clair de Lune

Captured yesterday in the Garden of the Gods, the moon ascending in the east. Simply breathtaking. I wish I'd had a better lens with me. It was a beautiful (but cold) day out there, and hardly anyone about.

And now, for your listening pleasure:

To me, the Garden of the Gods is at its prettiest when there's a light dusting of snow on the rocks. So beautiful!

I don't think it got over 16° today (-9° Celsius), so since I'm lucky enough to have the option, I worked from home. No pictures were taken! Here's a standard issue downtown Colorado Springs street shot taken on November 17th.

Tomorrow I have no choice but to go out into the world and do stuff. I'll try and remember to bring a camera with me!

Yesterday before the Superbowl I had a couple of errands to run, and it was a gorgeous day so I brought a camera along. In my wanderings I ended up in the Old North End, driving through my favorite neighborhood. This beauty made as good a subject as any! According to my handy dandy copy of Exploring the Old North End Neighborhood of Colorado Springs, 1738 North Wood Avenue was built in 1906 by Robert P. Davie and his wife Martha. Mr. Davie was president of the Davie Realty Company and the Davie Building and Investment Company. This is just one of many gorgeous, historic old homes on Wood Avenue, the street where I plan to live just as soon as I win the lottery. 😉

Sunday Style!

I love this beautiful purse! Along with everything else in Yobel Market. I bought some great earrings there a couple of years ago and they're still my favorite pair -- I wear them practically every day. The coolest thing about Yobel Market is that all of their gorgeous, gorgeous merchandise is ethically sourced, which means you're not buying sweatshop clothes made by exploited people working under horrible conditions. By shopping at Yobel, you're helping to lift up marginalized communities in developing countries. Here's their mission statement: "To empower and promote the value of exploited, displaced, and impoverished people of the world through the development of sustainable economic opportunities." I highly recommend shopping here! You can find Yobel Market in the Ivywild School.

February 2020 Theme Day: Streetscape

It's February! The first of the month is Theme Day for City Daily Photo bloggers, and February's theme is streetscape. I took this photo today from the corner of Tejon and Platte. That's a pretty bitchin' Camaro, by the way! I think it's a 1970 model year. The car behind it is no slouch, either. I saw a few beautiful oldies out there today because the weather was gorgeous, tomorrow is Superbowl Sunday and we'll all be hunkered down watching the game, and on Monday it's supposed to be frigid and snowing. Gotta take the classic out for a spin while you can!

CDP bloggers worldwide have been posting streetscape photos all day -- click HERE to see them. Enjoy!
Bonus shot: check out what the Camaro driver did when he noticed me taking his picture. Of course I had to reciprocate in kind.
