This is my favorite part of the Denver Botanic Gardens. It was not in its full summer glory yet when I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago, but the Japanese Garden is, for me, worth the drive to Denver on its own.

Sunday Style!
Spotted a couple of Saturdays ago downtown, as I was leaving the Reproductive Rights Rally. Not only is her outfit cute, she walked with such casually jaunty confidence, it was hard not to notice her.

More tropical goodness in the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory. Tomorrow is Sunday Style; I'll take you to the Japanese garden on Monday.

Exploring the Denver Botanic Gardens
A couple of weekends ago, I paid a visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens with my friend JB. Neither of us had been there in quite a long time. (And usually whenever I'm at the Denver Botanic Gardens it's because I'm shooting a wedding, so there's no chance to go exploring.) Since it was mid May, not all the beds and borders had been planted yet and some of the perennials were still waking up from winter. Nevertheless, there was still plenty to see, and both of us garden fanatics came out of it fully inspired. We plan on going back next month when things are fully in bloom, especially the rose garden.
I took plenty of pictures and will be sharing over the next several days. Stay tuned for more!

Late Spring Snowstorm
Last weekend we got quite a dumping of snow. In my neighborhood it was about six inches, but other parts of town got as much as double that. It wasn't the fluffy, powdery kind but the heavy and wet stuff that's typical this time of year. The weather had gotten hot far too early in May, and it's been extremely windy and bone dry -- no precipitation in ages -- so I did not complain about a few inches of soggy snow and a couple of days of rain (and neither did Frodo, our dog). We needed it. The fire danger has been off the charts, so we all got to breathe easy for at least a few days, anyway. All of these pictures were taken in our backyard, and as you can see, like so many other trees around the city, our silver maple unfortunately lost some large branches.
After several days of dreariness and chill, the sun finally showed itself again this afternoon, and save for the many broken tree limbs still littering the streets, it was as if the snowstorm had never happened.

Golden Backlight
If golden backlight is your jam, Colorado is the place for you. I took this picture last week in Manitou while on a shoot at the Cliff House.

Sunday Style!
I will not judge anyone for going to a home improvement store or garden center looking like a sweaty schlub. I know I've often been in the middle of some godawful project when I ran out of something or other and had to go and buy whatever it was while looking my absolute worst. That's why I was pleasantly surprised to come across this lady in the parking lot at Rick's Garden Center. She looked downright cute!

A Palate Cleanser
I'm a little late with today's post, since I've been at my computer all day editing a complex shoot I did a few days ago. Finally I have a free minute! I thought that after the anger and energy of the last few posts, I'd share this tranquil spring moment at Nancy Lewis Park as a bit of a palate cleanser.

Reproductive Rights Rally (Part 3)
A few final images from last Saturday's Reproductive Rights Rally in Acacia Park. I had originally thought the number of participants across the country was in the hundreds of thousands, but today I read that it was over a million people protesting, in cities big and small.

Reproductive Rights Rally (Part 1)
Along with hundreds of thousands of other Americans, I participated in a reproductive rights rally in my city last Saturday. In Colorado Springs it was only a rally and not a march, and there was a large turnout. I was there more to participate than take pictures, but I did get some pictures worth sharing. Since I'm too angry about this situation to pontificate, I will refrain from further comment and with very little comment tomorrow and the next day -- I'll let the photos speak for me.

Strange Tableau
I came across this strangely adorable tableau at Nancy Lewis Park the other day. This pair never moved from their positions the entire time I was there. In fact, they didn't move, period. She sat in the shade and scrolled through her phone, he napped on the ground in the heat of the sun. They never looked at each other or spoke. I encountered them on the way in and again on the way out, and it was like they were statues.

Don't Feed the Ducks and Geese
In order to get to this picturesque spot in Nancy Lewis Park where she's feeding the ducks and geese with her grandson, this woman had to walk past not one, but two prominent signs that literally say "Don't Feed the Ducks and Geese." I find it hard to believe that she somehow didn't see them, she simply chose to ignore their message because she wanted to do what she wanted to do. Of course she was feeding the waterfowl the worst possible thing: white bread. When I mentioned to her that bread is especially harmful, she seemed quite shocked. She asked me what would be a better choice, and I told her grapes. Her response to that was actually kind of funny; she wanted to know how the birds can get at the grapes when the grapes inevitably sink! Uh, ducks and geese can put their heads underwater, lady. That's how they naturally eat when people aren't throwing crappy human food at them. Sigh. Please read and heed the signs, people, and even though it's fun to feed the animals, it's truly not good for them, so just don't do it!

Untitled
A client of mine who's an artist has this painted on the door to her garage. Basically every surface of her home has some sort of fun paint or embellishment. It's a unique, fun home.

Sunday Style!
Last Sunday I shared some groovy jeans worn by a lady at the fabric store, and I promised to show you her sewing project this week. She was buying some purple fabric, so by way of making small talk I asked her what it was for; she told me it was to be used as a lining for a jacket, which she had in a plastic bag on her arm. I coaxed her to show it to me and was dumbfounded when she told me that she had done all of this embroidery herself, and by hand! And it had only taken her a couple of weeks to do it! My hands ache just contemplating this. The purple fabric was a perfect match to that incredible embroidery. I'm sure the whole project came out stunningly. What a talent!

Things You See at the Garden Center (Part 4)
They have a great selection of both ordinary and extraordinary succulents at Rick's Garden Center, including a spiral cactus that's nearly $150! Would you pay that much for a plant? I have friends who'd pay that much or more for a bottle of wine, so why not? If you treat the plant well, it may very well outlive you. It's something you could enjoy for a lifetime.
