Pat and I popped into Poor Richard's Bookstore this afternoon, where I found this chic young woman manning (or woman-ning) the cash register. She told me her name was Kate and then she struck a cute pose for me. Thanks for the picture, Kate!

Yellow

A peek at the interior of Poor Richard's Feed and Read, a favorite haunt of mine since my college days. I like the cheery yellow mural they've been sporting lately.
And now, for your listening pleasure...

Sunday Style!
I noticed this striking young woman at Poor Richard's last Saturday while I was having lunch with my friend JB. Of course that awesome little crocheted top caught my eye, so I asked for a picture. Her name is Dannae, and it turns out she made it herself. I'm impressed! It looks great on her. I also like her multicolored Easter-themed manicure. (I had every intention of posting these pictures last Sunday -- Easter -- but I was too exhausted from doing heavy yard work to do a blog post).
Unrelated side note: see that guy behind her in the picture below? That's Dannae's partner, and after a minute or two of small talk we realized that I had taken his baby pictures many years ago! He was a cute little dude back then, and now he's a father himself. He and Dannae have a gorgeous baby girl. Isn't that fun?

Achillea
One of our newer Art on the Streets additions. This one's called Achillea by Yul Jorgensen and you can find it on Tejon Street near the Poor Richard's complex.

Four by Brother Luck
If you're a fan of the TV cooking competition show "Top Chef", you've probably heard of Colorado Springs chef and restaurateur Brother Luck. He's also appeared on "Last Chance Kitchen", "Beat Bobby Flay" (he won!) and "Chopped", where he was eliminated in the final round. So he's kind of a big deal in our city's foodie scene. He opened a new restaurant, Four by Brother Luck, a couple of years ago. It's on Tejon, across the street from Poor Richard's. I've yet to dine at Four, primarily because it's really a restaurant for carnivores, so I don't qualify! By all accounts it's fantastic. I know we've got plenty of amazing chefs here who haven't gone the cooking competition TV show route like Brother Luck has, and they all deserve recognition. That said, it's pretty cool to have such a renowned chef in Colorado Springs. If you're visiting the city, you should make Four one of your dining destinations.

Sunday Style!
The night before St. Valentine's Day I stopped in at Poor Richard's to grab some dinner. I got lucky and found a parking spot across the street, in front of Colorado Co-op, and their red-themed shop window caught my eye. I love this color, it doesn't have to be Christmas or St. Valentine's Day for me to want to wear it!

Let the planting begin!
Pat and I went to lunch at Poor Richard's the other day with some friends who were visiting from out of town. All over downtown, crews were filling in the downtown planters. By the time we were finished eating, this one on Boulder and Tejon was filled in and they had moved on to the next one. In a few short weeks it will be all blooms. I love our downtown planters in summer!

Stone cold
Pat and I had coffee at Rico's on Sunday morning, and as we were leaving I noticed this note on a car parked in front of the building. At first I thought it was a love note (after all, it's paired with a red rose, albeit a mostly dead one), but when I got home and pulled it up on my computer monitor, I saw that it was a breakup note! Here's what it says:
"Dear CC,
This situation tears me apart for more than one reason. I have chosen to remove myself from the picture. I hope you find what you are looking for. I will cherish the memories we made together."
What in the hell?!? Who breaks up with someone like this, and so publicly? Especially with calligraphy on what looks like handmade paper? Very strange! If it's really a breakup note, this CC person is probably better off if you ask me! Perhaps the writer means Colorado College when they say "CC" -- did they have a crummy time at school? Does this car belong to a CC administrator? I'm dying of curiosity but I guess we'll never know the answer!
And now, for your viewing pleasure, the Sex and the City episode where Berger breaks up with Carrie on a Post-It note. "Read it and weep, my friends!"

Sunday Style!
Look who I found wandering Tejon Street dressed in an elf costume! It's Richard Skorman, owner of Poor Richard's and beloved city council member. Rumor has it (shhhhh!) that he puts coins in parking meters during the holidays, to prevent shoppers from getting parking tickets. The snazzy costume is a bonus. Richard is the best!

Sunday Style!
I love a person who's not afraid to stand out! I found this fashion original at Poor Richard's last weekend, and she cheerfully posed for me for a few quick snaps out on the sidewalk. I am chagrined to admit that I can't remember her name! I wrote it down but can't find my notes, and without my notes I'm hopeless. Anyway, everything she's wearing telegraphs how unique and quirky she is, from the bat wing hair clips to the kitty cat shoes. Love it!

Oh me oh my!
Pat and I spotted this brand spanking new Porsche 911 GT3 RS in the parking lot behind Poor Richards the other day. It still had the temporary plates on. Oh me oh my! I'm pretty sure this car is in the neighborhood of $190,000 (correct me if I'm wrong), which makes it an extravagance that very few people can afford to indulge in. If I were to win the Lotto tomorrow, I'd still feel guilty buying a car like this! But I sure would like to drive it. Just for five short minutes. Wouldn't that be fun?

An alternative to the land of pink and blue plastic
If you have kids on your shopping to-do list this holiday season, I highly recommend Little Richard's Toy Store at 320 N. Tejon Street. I know, I know. Your kids want Barbie stuff, and the latest superhero action figures. Or video games. But once you've made the rounds of Toys-R-Us and Target, shop the little guy for a few "outside the box" items. The cool thing about Little Richard's is that they stock all the great toys that you won't see at the big box stores. Stuff that's fun, interesting, different, and (gasp!) even educational. I love this store and I shop for my god-daughter there all the time. I highly recommend it!

Sunday Style!
Yesterday afternoon I headed downtown for Small Business Saturday. I stopped into the Poor Richard's complex, where I bought a box of Christmas cards at the bookstore and a hot cocoa (much needed!) at Rico's. While I was waiting for my drink, I couldn't help but notice this cute gal at a nearby table. I like her striped, cowl necked sweater, trendy dark manicure, and silver jewelry, but I especially like her groovy velvet hat -- and of course her cute smile! Thanks Sarah for letting me share your style on the blog today!

Rico's
Last Friday some friends and I congregated at Rico's Café and Wine Bar downtown, to listen to our friend Drew perform his original music. Of course I brought a camera, and when I got bored of taking pictures of Drew (there's only so many pictures you can take of a guy playing the guitar and singing!), I turned my lens on the glass of wine sitting on the table next to me. If you haven't been to Rico's, you should check it out! Yes they have a fabulous wine list, and they also have coffee, great food, and wonderful desserts baked by my good friend Angie. On weekend nights Rico's features live music. It's a great, mellow, grown up place to hang out and enjoy yourself.

Entrance in back
The other night Pat and I had dinner at Poor Richard's, one of our favorite restaurants, and instead of going in through the front door, we went in the back (where the patio is). I guess it's been a long time since I've gone in the back way -- I don't remember this fun mural over the door, and the armadillo. It's so much fancier than it used to be!
