Welcome to Colorado Springs Daily Photo!

Hi, I'm Tamera, a professional wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs. But this blog isn't about my professional work; no, it's a daily love note to my beautiful city, where I've lived for most of my life. I love it here and I hope you enjoy seeing Colorado Springs through my eyes and lens!

Bring on the summer!

A shot taken out my car window at the intersection of Nevada and Fontanero, right by my studio. You can see that the trees are almost in full leaf now. All of our downtown avenues in the residential areas have wide, grassy medians with century old oaks marching down them in pairs. And of course all the homes are all like these Victorian and Craftsman beauties. So wonderful. I love downtown in summer!

Memorial Day

It's Memorial Day! Are you enjoying your three-day weekend? I thought it would be nice to post a photo of our local American Legion on a day that honors those who have lost their lives in service of our country.

Ahhhh, gardening

Sigh. I took this picture the other day in my secret garden, around the south end of our house. This is what I like to call a Big Fat Mess. That poor garden has been sadly neglected by yours truly the last couple of years. You're looking at Lily of the Valley, which is being overtaken by mint, and in the top left corner you can see the Virginia Creeper swooping down to choke out everything in its path. And what you can't see in this picture is miles and miles of English Ivy, which has gotten completely out of control. Ugh. It looks like I will be spending the next few days doing some long overdue gardening, and not the fun kind. Does anyone want some mint??? I've got plenty!

The return of the Robin family

Mr. and Mrs. Robin have returned and are raising two babies this year! Or maybe it's three. It's hard to tell from this angle but I don't dare get any closer; Mrs. Robin divebombed my head when I went in the backyard to snap a picture of her little brood yesterday. She's such a good mother, protecting her babies! I've lost count of how many years running we've had baby robins on our kitchen greenhouse window. I just don't have the heart to remove the nest once they're finished with it every spring. I don't know that it would do any good anyway -- they'd probably just build a new one next year! Aren't their babies cute?

Yummo!

Yesterday Pat and I had lunch at the Olive Branch, where my good friend Angie is a baker. She showed us some chocolate cupcakes that she had just finished baking. They looked so yummy, I thought they deserved to be photographed!

Monument Valley Park in bloom

Just a small sampling of the flowers coming in to bloom at the demonstration garden in Monument Valley Park, captured yesterday. I'm ready for summer!

The Warehouse's new mural

Here's a wider view of the Warehouse's new mural. You can see that it's going to be huge. I can't wait to see the finished product!

The Warehouse gets a new mural

I posted about the Warehouse way back in January, with a picture of the sign on the west side of the building. The other day I noticed that a brand new mural was going up on that otherwise blank wall. Today I went back to get a picture of the work in progress, and was lucky enough to come across the muralist on the job.

Roller derby night

Earlier tonight there was a double header at the City Auditorium: our league (the Pikes Peak Derby Dames) versus Tucson (inexplicably called the Silicon Valley Roller Girls -- isn't Silicon Valley in southern California???). I missed most of the first bout because of work. The second bout featured the "B squads" from each league, seen here, and I'm afraid our girls had a bad time of it! The Slamazons were pretty much getting creamed by the KillaBytes when we left halfway through, and I doubt they made up the deficit by the end of the bout. Too bad! But there's always next time, girls! I'm still a loyal fan!

Gold Camp Road

This shot was taken through the windshield as we were heading back home from our little sojourn (see the last few days' worth of posts for more pretty pictures). Gold Camp Road is a beautiful drive, and if you live around here you should really take an afternoon to explore it. Four wheel drive isn't really necessary, but there are roads branching off it that are definitely 4x4 access only. And I mean aggro 4x4 -- and if you've never been four-wheeling you are seriously missing out, it's a blast! But Gold Camp Road itself is well graded throughout, although there are some scary dropoffs, so drive carefully! It's so very pretty any time of the year.

I'm a little late with my blog post today! Here's a pretty picture of the forest surrounding Rosemont Reservoir (and even though it was May 13th, you can see that the aspens aren't even in leaf yet). Enjoy!

Here be beavers!

We found a couple of gnawed up logs on the shore of Rosemont Reservoir the other day. It looks like the beavers have been busy!

Another view of Rosemont Reservoir. It's a pretty good-sized lake; this is just a small portion of it.

Rosemont Reservoir

A view of Rosemont Reservoir. I took this photo on Friday, when Pat and I spent the day taking a drive up Gold Camp Road with our friend Joe. As you can see, it was a little cloudy out, but I think it adds some nice drama to the sky and the reflection in the water.

Joe says that Rosemont Reservoir was once Spencer Penrose's private fishing hole. Imagine having this beautiful spot all to yourself. Heaven!

We took a little sojourn to Rosemont Reservoir the other day. Hiking down from the car to the water, I noticed these willow branches just coming into bud. So pretty!

On Friday Pat and I spent the afternoon with our friend Joe, driving up Gold Camp Road. Joe was nice enough to stop the car for me so I could snap a quick picture of this angler. I wonder if he caught anything. Doesn't matter, for as another angler later in the day told us, "It beats working!"

A view of the entire city

Yesterday Pat and I took a drive up Gold Camp Road with our friend Joe, who is an avid fisherman. The purpose of our excursion was to visit Rosemont Reservoir, one of Joe's favorite fishing spots, to see if the fish were biting yet. We stopped for a moment at a spot far above the city, where I took this photo. On a clearer day you'd be able to see more detail but I think this image shows how sprawling Colorado Springs is. It stretches way out into the plains!

Where ya headed?

I do not know why there's half a Porsche stuck to this building on Tejon Street, but I think it's cute!

Graupel?

Today's post is a video rather than a photo, since I thought it would be easier to show you yesterday's strange weather that way! This footage was taken as I was waiting my turn at Dutch Brothers Coffee. We've had a long run of sunny, dry and warm weather these last couple of weeks, so much so that I was kind of longing for a dreary, rainy day. I got what I asked for, in spades. Mostly we got rain here in town, alternating with this rather unusual weather phenomenon called graupel. Basically it's a cross between snow, hail and rain, and it looks like little styrofoam pellets. Colorado Springs is no stranger to bizarre weather so this is not the first time I've seen graupel, but I still think it's weird looking. I won't complain, though -- the higher elevations got snow!

The Mining Exchange Building

The Mining Exchange Building, built by Winfield Scott Stratton in 1902, sits on the southwest corner of Nevada and Pikes Peak. True to its name, it was the financial nerve center of the mining business. Once the gold boom went into decline, the stately building became the home to many different professions: lawyers, accountants, insurance companies, the railroads. In recent years there's been a bank on the ground floor. But in the last several months I've noticed that the Mining Exchange Building was empty and yet furiously under renovation, so I finally googled it after taking this picture the other day. Silly me, I seem to have completely missed the boat on the big news: this lovely edifice is being restored to its original beauty inside and out, so that it may become a luxury hotel! (Read THIS article in the Colorado Springs Independent to learn more.) I have always loved the Mining Exchange and its companion next door, the Independence Building, which is part of the big plan as well. In addition, the structure to the south of the Mining Exchange, the former Utilities Building, which is a true Art Déco gem and one of our few surviving examples of the Déco style of architecture, will be put into use as part of the hotel -- perhaps housing a fine dining restaurant or a jazz bar?

Well I can hardly wait. I can't believe I didn't hear this great news a year ago, when it was first announced. By all accounts they must be nearly finished with the project. I hope to shoot a wedding there very soon. It's going to be fabulous!

The Alamo Building

The Alamo Building on Tejon Street is a very recognizable downtown landmark. I think it's one of our prettier historic structures. Built in the 1880s as a hotel and originally called Himebaugh Place, it was renamed in February of 1886, on the 50th anniversary of the siege on the Alamo -- you know, the one in Texas. Interestingly, it was billed as "the first fireproof building in Colorado Springs". The Alamo served its purpose as a hotel for generations, then in the mid-1970s it was rehabbed into office spaces (in fact, my lawyer's offices are in the Alamo). The reflections on the surface come from the windows of the building across the street, the Plaza of the Rockies.

The light at the end of the tunnel?

Did you have a nice Mothers Day? My brother Chuck and I took our mom out to dinner at Mackenzie's Chop House, in the basement level of the historic Alamo Building downtown. Here's the view looking up the stairs.

Winter in the rearview mirror

Sorry to have missed the last couple of days, dear readers! I was actually quite sick and spent two days in bed, feeling sorry for myself. Today is much better! Pat and I went out in search of the cupcake truck a couple of hours ago, and it was so nice out! I think maybe, just maybe, winter is finally behind us. The thermometer in my car read 81F degrees (27 Celsius). Perfect! We saw lots of people out and about, enjoying the first true "shorts weather" of the year. Here's a little family crossing Platte Avenue at Tejon Street: mom, daughter, grandchild and faithful four-legged companion. Happy spring, everyone!

Exotic car free-for-all

No, these photos weren't taken at an exotic car show, they were taken in the parking lot of the Promenade Shops at Briargate a couple of days ago. For the automobile illiterate, the blue one is a Jaguar and the yellow one is a Lamborghini. While we have plenty of affluent people in Colorado Springs and Jaguars are not all that uncommon (we have a Jag dealership), I must say I can count on one hand the number of Lamborghinis I've seen around here. I'd venture to guess that it's a rare sight no matter where you happen to live, unless you call Monte Carlo or Beverly Hills home! Seeing these two beauties parked end to end in an ordinary mall parking lot is definitely something that'll make you stop in your tracks, say what on earth?, and snap a quick picture :-)

Relief, closure and solace

By now you've heard the news that the world's most wanted man, Osama Bin Laden, has been killed in Pakistan. I am sure that every American is experiencing a turmoil of emotions, among them relief, closure and solace. I know I am. I will never, ever forget September 11th, 2001, and how I sat rigidly on the couch for 15 hours straight watching the news in a state of suspended horror, as Peter Jennings' voice grew hoarse and a five o'clock shadow crept slowly across his face. I remember calling in to work to say I wouldn't be coming in that morning because of a plumbing emergency at home, and my boss telling me don't bother, haven't you heard the news? America is under attack, the Pentagon is in flames. And then turning on the television and watching in real time as the World Trade Center just... collapsed. Shock, horror and a sense of helplessness, and not being able to fully grasp what I was seeing unfold before my eyes. It was like some big budget Steven Spielberg movie come to life. It couldn't possibly be true. But it was.

And now the mastermind behind that terrible day is dead. It is horrible to express jubilation over the death of another human being, but I will say it: I'm glad he's dead. Even if it doesn't have a huge impact on the Taliban, al Qaida and other radical terrorist groups, I'm glad he's dead. To think of the pain and destruction he caused... well, this is a man who deserved to die badly. I have nothing but gratitude toward the brave Navy SEALs who carried out the secret operation that resulted in his demise, and toward President Obama, who gave the executive order to do so. Thank you, and to all of our troops who have been fighting this endless war on terror, thank you.

Theme day: mailbox

It's the first of the month, which means it's Theme Day! This month's theme is mailbox. I took this picture of the mailboxes behind the downtown post office just this afternoon. I hope I wasn't breaking any laws! Mr. Postmaster, I swear I'm not a terrorist, I'm just a devoted blogger ;o)

I think American mailboxes are a little boring compared to our European counterparts. English mailboxes are that gorgeous bright red, and in France they're yellow. Here's they're just Government Issue Blue. I do think they're functional and well-designed though -- I certainly make good use of them!

All over the world, City Daily Photo bloggers are sharing their theme day pictures. If you'd like to see more,
